Purpose:
The Interim Pastor will be responsible to Grimes First Presbyterian Church and the Des Moines Presbytery. In meeting this responsibility, the Interim Pastor will normally be expected to exercise pastoral, administrative, representational leadership within the church organization and to serve the needs of the church, as set forth below. This is a part-time position. The position requires great flexibility in hours available for work, including evenings and weekends.
The Interim Pastor will be the spiritual leader of Grimes First Presbyterian Church. This role includes preaching the word of God, performing all the scriptural duties of the office as seen in the Book of Order, and along with the Session—having general oversight of the worship and shepherding of the congregation.
The Interim Pastor of the Grimes First Presbyterian Church shall perform in the position as our Interim Pastor utilizing the following descriptions:
Accountability:
The Interim Pastor will be accountable to the Presbytery and to the Session through the Personnel Committee.
Worship
The Interim Pastor will oversee and lead worship services of our congregation. This includes weekly Sunday worship services as well as special services including weddings, funerals, and other special services. Planning of worship services will be with the Session’s Worship Committee, and the organist when necessary.
Professionalism
As an Interim Pastor, like the Session members as well as the Deacons, the Interim Pastor should effectively represent our church in many forums inside the church building as well as outside the walls of our church.
Leadership
Demonstrate leadership and the associated qualities in Worship services, Session meetings, and possibly committee meetings and other events associated with the Interim Pastor’s official duties.
Pastoral Care:
Make appropriate contact with the membership of the congregation, especially those needing special attention.
Administrative Responsibilities:
The Interim Pastor shall perform administrative duties associated with the church to the best of his/her ability. Appropriate involvement with church employees and volunteers is expected to ensure the duties are performed effectively, timely and in a cost-effective manner.
Compensation and Benefits:
This position is a part-time position and involves 20 hours of work per week, under a 12 month contract that may be extended in one to 12 month periods, upon written notice to, and the approval of, the Presbytery through its Commission on Ministry. The contract may be terminated by either the Interim Pastor or the Church upon 30 days written notice. Hourly and daily commitment of time will vary based on church activities, regularly scheduled meetings, and the church calendar. Compensation will be within guidelines set bySession and outlined as follows:
- $26,460 annual compensation that includes salary and housing expense
- $750 annually to be used towards continuing education.
- Automobile expense reimbursement up to $1,000 annually to be paid at the current IRS rate per mile.
- Paid vacation (4 weeks including 4 Sundays) annually.
- Paid continuing education (2 weeks including 2 Sunday) annually.
Check-in Meetings:
The Personnel Committee will regularly conduct check-in meeting with the Interim Pastor. The Committee along with Session and the church committees will pray for and support the Interim Pastor to help prepare our church for a permanent pastor.
