Fossil Fuel Divestment Issue Will Be Presented at Presbytery's February 2016 Meeting

The Compassion, Peace and Justice (CP&J) Task Force of the Presbytery of Des Moines recently studied an overture to the 222nd General Assembly which calls for fossil fuel divestment by the Presbyterian Foundation and Board of Pensions. The overture was initially passed by the Presbytery of San Francisco. Eight presbyteries have concurred with the overture to date. The Task Force is requesting that the Presbytery of Des Moines concur with this overture at its February 2016 meeting.

Our planet has been experiencing record high temperatures and extreme weather events, and the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has continued to rise. The Pope has issued his Laudato Si’ Climate Change encyclical, and many institutions, including the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Council of Churches, have decided to divest from Fossil Fuels.

We are excited about being a part of PC(USA)’s opportunity to speak with a loud and prophetic voice on behalf of creation. We believe that divestment is an essential tool, among many, that institutional and personal investors can use to influence the course of climate change. We pray that Presbyterians will join the faithful chorus of the UCC, Unitarians, Episcopalians, the World Council of Churches, and 5,000 institutions to date in divestment from fossil fuels.
