An Historic Moment in the History of our Presbytery

Ordinations are always a cause to celebrate. New church starts are nearly unheard of these days. And providing a worship experience for the Arabic-Speaking Community is no everyday occurance. Yet the Presbytery of Des Moines is honored tohave experienced all three on Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Cottage Grove Presbyterian Mission Center.

That's when Ekram Kachu, who came to the United States from Khartoum, Sudan, was ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and then commissioned as a CRE (Commissioned Ruling Elder). Congratulations to Ekram and to her family!

The seed grant for our new Arabic-Speaking Sudanese Worshiping Community comes from the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Thirteen new worshiping communities recently received nearly $200,000 total in mission program grants. Leader Ekram Kachu will use our local funding to provide the nearly 50 people in her new community with joint worship opportunities, Arabic-speaking Bible studies, and "women empowerment" cultural growth opportunities. This is the first church start in the Presbytery of Des Moines in nearly 20 years.

We wish Ekram well with this exciting opportunity!
