Reformation Sunday Celebration

Union Park Presbyterian Church of Des Moines celebrated the church's centennial and commemorated the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation at a special worship service on Sunday, October 29. Many participants wore traditional Scottish apparel, and three guests came in Renaissance garb!

The service began with a formal procession led by piper Sue Frambach. The congregation sang traditional hymns ("Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!", "The Church's One Foundation," and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"), accompanied by UPPC Music Director and organist Betty Reed, trumpet player Loren Esse, and a cello trio comprised of Carolyn Rogers, Kitty Metzger and Natasha Krier. The choir sang "Faith of Our Fathers," and the cello trio played the offertory, selections from favorite hymns. All joined in reciting a Centennial Litany, and Rev. Dr. Bob Cook shared an inspiring message, "Looking Back While Moving Forward." Piper Frambach's "Children's Chat" about her set of Great Highland bagpipes appealed to children of all ages.

After Pastor Bob’s blessing, the service ended with a special (shortened) version of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” that everyone could join in singing. The pastor and liturgist then recessed to the skirl of pipes playing “Scotland the Brave.”

A reception followed in the Fellowship Hall, hosted by Bob and Joanne Mahaffey and the Centennial Committee.
