25th Annual CROSS Ministries Back-to-School Giveaway a HUGE SUCCESS!

On Saturday, August 5, CROSS held the 25th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway for the children of low and no income families. This year a record number of 1,764 children were provided with a new backpack filled with the basic supplies needed to begin their school year. Even though we initially purchased and prepared supplies for 1,500 children, additional backpacks and materials were donated from an array of businesses, churches, and private individuals making it possible for us to continue handing out filled backpacks to an extra 264 children.

In spite of the fact that the Giveaway was scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, when I arrived at Polk County River Place at 7:30 AM to finish last minute preparations I discovered we already had 35 families waiting in line. By 9:15, rather than at our scheduled 10:00 AM opening, we threw open the doors and started our day with a skeleton crew of volunteers assisting the hundreds of parents and children waiting in line.

Special thanks to Joyce Hoffman for scheduling volunteers, Laura Taylor-Lloyd for ordering the majority of the supplies on-line, Dwight Tomes for serving as our primary photographer, to the Covenant Youth Group and the Two Rivers Partnership for an evening of pizzas while unpacking supplies, to CROSS Assistant David Moore for his hard work and dedication, and to the more than 150 people who volunteered their time to load and unload supplies, fill backpacks, and distribute the supplies. Additional thanks to Polk County River Place for allowing us to use the building, Salvation Army for donating and handing out hundreds of bottles of water, to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department for sending two officers who provided delightful community relations during the event, to Variety, the Children’s Charity for their donation of $5,000 toward the cost of the supplies, to the Clive Library for donating hundreds of books, and to Channel 5 News for covering the event.

Special thanks for this amazing team effort and to all who donated financially to make a difference in the lives of the children!
